Jun 17, 2021: Prof. SK Sinha Founder Chairman and Chief Architect of L2M Rail spoke at the Webinar on Cyber Singalling organized by HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH, Germany as a part of its Rail Webinar Series. Prof Sinha was the lead speaker of the webinar, who eloquently introduced the participants to the subject. The webinar was attended by rail technology experts, top executives, and business managers from across the globe, both from Governments and Industries.
The topic of the webinar was “Cyber Signaling using COTS“. Railway assets are both mobile (locomotives, coaches, wagons, etc.) and stationery (railway tracks, switches, sleepers, etc.). All these assets need to be monitored and maintained to ensure safety. Today, most of these assets are monitored manually and maintenance is carried out at predetermined intervals.
The technology available today (Industry 4.0) enables continuous monitoring by online detection of device parameters and their automatic comparison with average performance parameters. Hence it is now possible to implement monitoring systems that indicate when the equipment is deteriorating and failure probability is increasing, and schedule maintenance accordingly. This strategy will not only reduce the maintenance costs but minimize the occurrence of serious faults as well.
Fibre Bragg Grating (FBG) based sensors have been researched extensively in the past three decades and have also been used in the aviation industry for strain and temperature monitoring. L2M Rail has brought this technology to railways for monitoring relevant parameters associated with both the mobile and stationary assets. This webinar gave a glimpse of the implementation of online monitoring of railways assets with FBG sensing technologies developed by L2M Rail. It is a well-known fact that L2M Rail has developed FBG based Cyber Signalling System (CSS) for industrial sidings and Wheel Impact Load Detector (F-WILD).
