On-Board Condition Monitoring System (OBCMS)

What is rolling stock?

Rolling stock is railway coaches, wagons, and machinery that move on railway lines.

Why is OBCMS important?

Safety and efficiency can be improved if Rolling Stock is monitored in real-time. When the condition of rolling stock is monitored in real-time, it can help in improving the safety and efficiency of the railways. OBCMS, being designed and developed by ‘Lab-to-market’ captures and analyses data when rolling stock is loaded and running with maximum speed: this way it would help to know the health of rolling stock better than when it is stationary or not loaded. This way monitoring would also reduce expenses for maintenance and also improve the operating ratio.

How does OBCMS work?

OBCMS is being designed and developed to provide the below information of rolling stock in real-time through:

  • Lateral and vertical accelerations at axle box level
  • Acoustics of bearings
  • Temperature of bearings
  • Condition of brake rigging
  • Quality of air inside the coach
  • Noise level inside the Coach
  • Water level in water tanks in coach toilets
  • Fire and smoke inside the coach

OBCMS can also monitor the condition of track health through sensing of abnormal jerks, real-time, at a specific locations.
