We have filed our third Indian Patent entitled “A system for temperature monitoring of an axle box using FBG sensors and the method thereof” on 12 July 2019, which was granted on 15 January 2021.This invention makes it possible to monitor the temperature of the axle box of wheelset bearings of railway vehicles on a real-time basis, using Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors. This innovation forms part of our revolutionary On-Board Condition Monitoring System (OBCMS).  A rise in hot axle box temperature is an excellent predictive diagnostic of a bearing about to fail. On-board monitoring of axle box bearing temperature is a safety-critical function, which may lead to catastrophic events such as derailment or fire when not monitored on a real-time basis. Thus, monitoring the hot axle box temperature enables the detection of bearings presenting a risk of failure. Our system triggers an alarm when the axle temperatures cross permissible limits to guarantee safety.

Most of the existing solutions across the world for measuring hot axle temperatures are mounted on tracks and measure the temperature of the axle box only when the train passes by. Axle box temperature will be measured again only when the train passes by another track mounted system. What if the temperature of the axle box crosses the permissible limits in between two measurements? Can we risk accidents if the increase in axle box temperature goes unmonitored between two measuring points?

Our solution is an answer to this real-life problem. We have demonstrated the success of our solution to Indian Railways in a moving Shatabdi express between Bangalore to Chennai by constantly monitoring the hot axle temperature on a real-time (minute-to-minute) basis.
